يستخدم MP4 بنية atom/box من ISOBMFF: ftyp (النوع) وmoov (البيانات الوصفية + فهرس المسار) وmdat (البيانات المرمّزة). يدعم مسارات متعددة للفيديو والصوت والترجمات. يتيح Fast-start (moov في البداية) البث التدريجي.

التاريخ

نُشر MP4 كمعيار ISO (ISO 14496-14) في عام 2003. مبني على تنسيق QuickTime من Apple وحاوية ISO Base Media File Format، مما جعله خليفة طبيعياً لـ AVI وMPEG.
