DOCX Microsoft Word का आधुनिक, XML-आधारित डॉक्यूमेंट फ़ॉर्मेट है जिसने Word 2007 में पुराने बाइनरी DOC की जगह ली। एक DOCX फ़ाइल XML फ़ाइलों का ZIP आर्काइव है जिसमें टेक्स्ट, फ़ॉर्मेटिंग, इमेज और मेटाडेटा अलग-अलग स्टोर होते हैं। यह रिच टेक्स्ट, टेबल, चार्ट, ट्रैक्ड चेंजेज़ और मैक्रोज़ का समर्थन करता है।

DOCX फ़ाइल OPC (Open Packaging Conventions) के अनुसार ZIP कंटेनर है। document.xml में पैराग्राफ़ और रन मार्कअप, styles.xml में फ़ॉर्मेटिंग, word/media/ में इमेज होती हैं। .rels फ़ाइलें पार्ट्स को जोड़ती हैं और [Content_Types].xml MIME प्रकार निर्धारित करता है।
इतिहास
Microsoft ने DOCX को Office Open XML (OOXML) के हिस्से के रूप में Office 2007 में पेश किया — प्रोप्राइटरी बाइनरी से खुले, ज़िप-पैकेज्ड XML की ओर बदलाव। OOXML 2006 में ECMA-376 और 2008 में ISO/IEC 29500 बना। तब से DOCX डिफ़ॉल्ट Word फ़ॉर्मेट है और Google Docs, LibreOffice और Apple Pages भी इसे सपोर्ट करते हैं।
