AVI ใช้ RIFF (Resource Interchange File Format) เป็นโครงสร้าง chunk-based สำหรับ interleave stream วิดีโอและเสียง ข้อจำกัดหลัก ได้แก่ ไม่มีการรองรับ variable frame rate ดั้งเดิม ไม่มีซับไตเติลในตัว และขีดจำกัดขนาดไฟล์ 2 GB (ถูกแก้ไขด้วย OpenDML/AVI 2.0)
